A seminar titled “<strong>Revolution of Semiconductor Industry and Its Scaling Path to Innovation</strong>” was held at 11.00 am on April 8 Sunday in Room 266 at the Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) department at AIUB. The seminar was held remotely via the Internet using Videoconferencing Technology. This was the third seminar of its kind at EEE dept. at AIUB.
The seminar was organized by the EEE department with great support from <em>Dr. ABM Siddique Hossain,</em> Professor and Dean, Faculty of Engineering. It was hosted by <em>Mr. Shahriyar Masud Rizvi</em>, Assistant Professor, EEE department. The seminar was conducted remotely by <em>Dr. Shahriar Akbar</em>, PTD Device Engineer, Intel, from Oregon, USA. The program was attended by <em>Mr. Rinku Basak, </em>Assistant Professor and Coordinator, Faculty of Engineering<em>, Mr. Farhadur Arifin, </em>Assistant Professor<em>, Mr. Chowdhury Akram Hossain</em>, Lecturer, <em>Mr. Faisal Abrar</em>, Lecturer, <em>Mr. Ahmed Mortuza Saleque</em>, Lecturer, <em>Mr. Arman Riaz</em>, Lecturer, <em>Mr. Subrata Biswas</em>, Lecturer and <em>Mr. Salman Quaiyum</em>, Lecturer, from the EEE department.
The target of the seminar was EEE and CSE undergraduate and graduate students who wish to enter the semiconductor industry as device engineers or process engineers. The presentation focused on Intel’s innovative and revolutionary scaling approaches over the last 40 years, including Intel’s next-generation scaling technologies. At the end the presenter discussed career opportunities associated with various stages of IC design and fabrication process (such as opportunities as Device Engineer, Layout Engineer, System-Level Engineer, Verification Engineer, RTL Engineer etc.) at Intel. In the end a question and answer session was held to address the various queries and concerns of the audience. The abstract of the presentation and a short biography of the presenter are added below.
<strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Abstract:</span></strong><br />
Transistor (MOSFET) is the basic building block of Microprocessor. To keep pace with Moore’s Law, transistor scaling has historically used smaller dimensions as a means to reduce cost per function and increase speed; however, modern computing applications demand improved power efficiency over raw increases in operating frequency. These new product requirements have shifted how transistors are developed to focus more on reductions in leakage and active power. This Technology Presentation will describe Intel’s revolutionary and pioneering scaling behavior over 40 years along with its two generation ahead supreme cutting edge technology industry-leading low power capabilities for products that range from high performance servers to low power smart phones. Furthermore the talk will include a brief tutorial about the basics of transistor operation and its key device aspects to determine performance roadmap.
<strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">About the Presenter:</span></strong>
Dr. Shahriar Akbar is currently working as a Senior Device Engineer in Intel’s Research and Technology Division 14nm Technology Node, located in Oregon, USA. He finished his B.S. in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE), from BUET in 2000. He served as a Lecturer in the EEE department at BUET for 6 months before leaving for USA for graduate school. He obtained his M.S. and Ph.D. from Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) department at University of Texas at Austin in 2002 and 2005, respectively. Afterwards he joined Intel as a Device Engineer and worked in Intel’s 65nm and 32nm Technology Node. He is currently working on 14nm Technology Node.
